The Firefighter's Workout 2011

THE FIREFIGHTER'S WORKOUT APP / Mike Stefano
Since the publication of The Firefighter's Workout Book (HarperCollins 2000), I've been heavily involved in preparing firefighters for the rigors of fire suppression, as well as readying new recruits as they work their way through the testing / training process. After years of training thousands of firefighters and candidates, I've come to a few absolute conclusions on how to best get the job done. I've updated the Firefighter's Workout 2011 "digital app" to reflect those changes. First let me introduce you to a few brave new concepts about exercise.

CONCEPT #1: Cardio / Resistance / Flexibility Training can be performed simultaneously.
Which means?

CONCEPT #2: Health, fitness, weight loss, toning, joint mobility, can be trained in one set and you save tons of time and energy.
Sounds too simple, how is this done?

CONCEPT #3: Simply lift a moderate weight with ballistic efficiency for high repetitions at a specific pace over a specific time.
What the hell is ballistic efficiency?

If you don't know, you should, because it's what you need to get the job done. The real essence behind the system lies in the dynamic movement associated with kettlebell lifting. We recommend use of a World Kettlebell Club professional grade kettlebell as the best tool for the job. The shape and design have evolved over decades, and it is the accepted, safe standard around the world.
Okay, let's hear more about kettlebells. [BUY KETTLEBELLS]

APPOINTED AKC FIRE-RESCUE ADVISOR
Things changed in 2006 when I was appointed Fire Rescue Advisor to the American Kettlebell Club (AKC). Kettlebell lifting was already gaining some popularity in the United States when I teamed up with AKC head coach and world champion lifter, Valery Fedorenko. I learned what I'd been seeing on the internet and on DVD's wasn't a true representation of this decades old discipline. Many of these new moves were not actual lifts recognized by kettlebell athletes around the world. This hodgepodge approach was also lacking any real history to support its safety and effectiveness. Early claims actually cited Russian studies on kettlebell lifting, but failed to mention the blaring distinction.

As a world champion and record holder, my coach officially introduced genuine kettlebell lifting (as it's existed for decades) to me and the rest of America in January 2007 when holding the first ever AKC coach certification. The efficient and dynamic movements associated with genuine lifting have a centuries old history to support the results. In the past five years, since being introduced to kettlebell lifting, I've witnessed this remarkable process first hand hundreds of times. The system is tried and true, and it works every time. Anyone who walks into my gym can't help but recognize the validity of the process.

A PROGRAM THAT DELIVERS
The ancient theory and methodology that stands behind my system is slowly being accepted by main stream America. Much like the ancient art of Yoga, Kettlebells will become a staple in this country, but for right now the typical new lifter has a sea of over-information to navigate. As firefighters we don't have the luxury of wasting time on a program that doesn't work, or worse yet, causes injury. We need a program with laser beam focus that delivers exactly what we need -FAST!

JOB PERFORMANCE
The lifter needs to build tremendous strength and endurance for typical fire operations such as hose advancement, and overhaul. Flexibility is also a major issue, allowing a full range of motion and agility, an often undervalued quality that can also reduce injury.

WEIGHT LOSS
Firefighters are no different than the rest of society, but carrying an extra fifty pounds is a real liability when you're expected to don gear that can weigh 60 pounds or more.

CARDIO HEALTH
Heart attack still looms as the number one cause of line of duty death. Building an efficient heart / lung system should be priority one of any firefighter specific training.

PRACTICALITY
If the program isn't easily plugged into your daily grind, it will usually fall by the wayside. A few busy tours, some extra work at home, and the long arduous gym workouts never happen. What the brothers and sisters of the fire service need is a quick effective, in and out workout. Kettlebell timed sets deliver that.

Firefighters across the nation will now have access to my new and improved Firefighter's Workout 2011 that features one simple exercise - that's right, one movement that can be done from as little as 1 minute to long as 20 minutes. I'll show you how to manipulate six variables to accommodate your exact needs. The program is best gone through with a pro grade kettlebell, but any kettlebell will do in a pinch. You can even substitute with a dumbbell at the lower levels, just to get started.

The Firefighters Workout 2011 features one full body dynamic exercise that covers it all - no hype, no fluff, just a real system that delivers. It's a relatively simple exercise that can be learned a few minutes by most people. You'll be shown how to forever improve, perfect, and advance over time. This one simple movement recreates many of tasks performed on the fireground. Hose advance, overhaul, stair climbing, forcible entry, can all be somewhat mimicked, challenged and thereby improved with a single kettlebell, on a simple 4 x 6 foot mat, without leaving your home. You'll get fit, tone up, build job performance and heart health, while you lose weight.

Okay, now you know what this type of training can do, and why it works.
