Time On the Nozzle versus Time Under the Bell article by Mike Stefano
A SIMPLE COMPARISON OF TWO LIKE TASKS
For the last two and half years I've been writing articles on why firefighting and kettlebell lifting are so alike, and why I feel proper training with kettlebells is the best way to prepare for the rigors of fire operations. My recently introduced First Responder Kettlebell Program (FRKP) is specifically designed to deliver exactly what a working firefighter needs. I'm currently offering this same program to departments nationwide via my FRKP Workshop. Check out the special introductory rate for all Long Island departments.
In this article we'll take a close look at firefighting's most basic operation, that of the nozzle man. He's the firefighter in the lead on any advancing hose line, and anyone who's had the knob at a structural fire can speak of what an effort is required to make it down those long, smokey hallways.
NOZZLE OPERATION VERSUS KETTLEBELL LIFTING - 20 COMMON POINTS
1. You must support a continuous load that never lets up
2. You must move a load steadily, but explosively
3. Primary focus is not on reps but getting the job done
4. Potential to generate substantial discomfort / pain
5. Experience and specific technique is very important
6. Bodyweight (size) is not always an advantage
7. Hand, wrist, and arm fatigue can be first to register
8. Huge contribution from the body's core area
9. Requires all three, strength, endurance, and flexibility
10. Huge effort is an integral part of every job / set
11. All about time - in air tank, of pre-selected set
12. Variety of age groups involved (18 to 68 plus)
13. Mental fortitude is a high priority
14. Perfect pacing with a specific plan required
15. Ability improves with experience
16. Ability enhanced by having passion for the activity
17. Never seeks to isolate body parts, muscle groups
18. No faking it - it's obvious if you can't do it
19. Delivers big rewards in self-satisfaction
20. Protects and enhances life
I'm passionate about firefighter fitness, and have always used, what I felt was the best possible program, on every group or individual I've trained. Kettlebell lifting, with methods taught to me directly by AKC Head Coach Valery, have completely transformed the way I look at all exercise, and has resulted in my current approach. The results I've seen have obliterated any possible resistance I may have had.
I urge you to take a peak at some of the videos below. Get a feel of what real kettlebell lifting using AKC methodology and timed sets are before you make any decisions. If you want to learn more about my first responder program: click here
