Read what the critics have to say

From The Chicago Tribune

Written by New York City firefighter and personal trainer Michael Stefano, this book was first published in hardcover in 2000, then republished this year in paperback and dedicated to the 343 New York firefighters who perished during the Sept. 11 evacuation of the World Trade Center.

Sprinkled with anecdotes about the firefighter's life, including the author's days as a rookie (or "probie," as the department calls them) and fires he has fought in different neighborhoods, "The Firefighter's Workout Book" is well thought out and easy to follow as a diet and exercise guide geared toward all levels of fitness, from beginner to advanced.

Stefano's program is based on one he developed for firefighters who wanted to stay fit without leaving the station (so there's a minimum of equipment needed). Because most firefighters don't have time between alarms for arduous workouts, Stefano writes, he developed a series of shorter, more intense workouts that don't "leave one totally drained and overly fatigued" and don't require "sophisticated or expensive equipment. . . . Hence, the 'Firefighter's Workout' was born."

Stefano covers goal-setting and priorities, cardiovascular training and heart-rate monitoring, warm-up, cool-down, strength training, flexibility, diet (with sample meal plans), as well as frequently asked questions about exercise. He also includes detailed strength and conditioning routines based on goals. Black and white photos show proper strength and stretching technique, and a glossary of exercise jargon is included. Stefano also tells readers how to assess fitness levels and workout programs and how to stay focused through meditation and other techniques.

Highly Recommended!

The stereotypical firefighter is strong and healthy: a hero working to save lives. So what better way for an average person to get in great physical shape than to follow a firefighter's diet and exercise regime? Stefano, a New York City fireman for 18 years and a personal trainer, leads the reader through a variety of exercises that cover all aspects of fitness, including aerobic, strength, and flexibility training. The author, who was decorated for bravery three times, urges readers to set goals for themselves and to make the time to exercise. His advice is safe and inspiring, and the workout is easy to follow. Stefano even urges readers to be wary of exercise programs that promise quick results--yet he does promise that by following this workout readers will see a noticeable difference in their bodies within three months. This book will be a solid addition to any public library's fitness section. Highly recommended.--Marianne Fitzgerald, P.L. of Charlotte & Mecklenburg Cty., NC 2000 Cahners Business Information.
